What Is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is a large body of research from education, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics.

Simply put, it helps answer one important question:

How do children learn to read—and what instructional methods are most effective?

The research consistently shows that most children benefit from explicit, systematic instruction rather than trying to figure reading out on their own.

That doesn’t mean reading can’t be joyful.

It simply means children need strong instruction before reading becomes automatic and enjoyable.

Reading Is More Than Looking at Words

Reading is made up of many skills working together.

• Hear individual sounds in words (phonemic awareness)

• Connect sounds to letters and phonograms (phonics)

One of the most powerful tools I use is systematic phonogram instruction, inspired by the Hillsdale College Literacy Essentials approach.

Rather than asking children to memorize hundreds of words, they learn the patterns that make up the English language.

• How letter combinations represent different sounds.

• How to decode unfamiliar words with confidence.

• How reading and spelling work together.

This explicit instruction helps children build understanding instead of relying on guessing or memorization.

Reading and Spelling Belong Together

Many programs teach reading and spelling separately.

I believe they should grow together.

During lessons, students don’t simply read words.

They also learn to:

• Hear the sounds.

• Build the word using phonograms.

• Read the word.

• Spell the word.

• Use it in writing.

When children understand how words are built, they become more confident readers and writers.
